#12: Never Stop Learning
Ever feel there aren't enough hours in the day to invest in yourself? Effective museum personnel schedule time to grow professionally. Imagine three days where your time, energy and resources are dedicated to learning, instead of putting out fires. InterActivity 2010: Invest Early, Inspire Growth gives you time to learn.

#11: Never Go It Alone
Cover more territory by bringing colleagues and board members to InterActivity. With more than 50 concurrent sessions, 4 salons, 5 study tours, 3 plenary sessions, 3 brown-bag sessions, plus 70 exhibit booths and 3 free pre-and post-conference sessions/workshops, InterActivity's content is comprehensive to say the least.

10#: Never Pay Full Price
A no-brainer. Save up to $160 off InterActivity rates by registering today! Early Bird Discount Season ends Monday, March 1. Looking for more budget-relieving resources? Check out ACM's InterActivity Justification Toolkit for financial aid resources and tips on how to save.

#9: Engage with Experts in the Field
Power lunch with James Chung, president of Reach Advisors, during one of InterActivity's three concurrent Brown Bag Sessions on Thursday, May 6. In January 2010, Chung and his team launched a study to dig deeper into the fundamental motivations of core visitors to museums. At InterActivity 2010, Chung will provide topline results from this survey. Who are Museum Advocates compared to the broader audience of core visitors? What triggers bring about that lifelong curiosity and affinity for museums? How can we deeply engage our visitors to create more Museum Advocates, both now and in the future?

Note: This session was recently added to InterActivity 2010. See page 15 of the Preliminary Program for more "power lunch" Brown Bag Sessions featuring federal funding experts and 2009 winners of the Promising Practice Award.

#8: Engage with Inspiring Thought Leaders
It's one thing to read a great book. It's an entirely other matter to meet the one who wrote the book. InterActivity 2010 features three keynote speakers who not only wrote a book or two, but will challenge the way you think about race, fundraising and development and what kids need to succeed in the 21st century.

  • Thurs, May 6: Dr. Johnnetta Cole, director of the National Museum of African Art

  • Fri, May 7: Dan Pallotta, founder of Pallotta Teamworks and author of Uncharitable: How Restraints on Nonprofits
    Undermine Their Potential

  • Sat, May 8: Dr. Peter Benson, president & CEO of the Search Institute

#7: Engage with Colleagues from Your Region
Your InterActivity registration fee provides free breakfast and networking opportunities all three days. Saturday's Regional Breakfast Rounds will give you the opportunity to meet with conference attendees in your region -- a perfect opportunity to develop potential partnerships and build resources in your backyard.

#6: Keep on Message
Delivering clear messages about your children's museum confirms your credibility, connects your target prospects emotionally, motivates key audiences to act and ensures their loyalty. InterActivity 2010 marketing sessions such as Uniting the Children's Museum Brand Around Early Childhood and Stop Marketing and Start Connecting will help you understand how to keep on message, what ACM and children's museums can do to improve messaging and the pay-offs for doing so.

#5: Keep Current
Hear foundation representatives speak about the changing forces that are reshaping the charitable giving landscape during The Future of Philanthropy salon. Discover new advocacy insights during the Connecting on the Grassroots Level salon. Talk about the latest cognitive theories and practical exhibit design applications during the How the Brain Wants to Learn session. For beginners, there's How to Get Your Social Media in Gear. For those further along, there's Social Media 201. Learn the latest to help you become a stronger museum professional.

#4: Keep Having Fun
The fun starts Wednesday night before InterActivity begins at the free Pecha Kucha Saint Paul evening session. The Pecha Kucha concept was devised in Tokyo in 2003 as an event for young designers to meet, network and show their work in public. It has turned into a massive celebration, with events happening in hundreds of cities around the world, inspiring creatives worldwide. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of "chit chat," it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. It's a format that makes presentations concise, and keeps things moving at a rapid pace. Have fun learning at InterActivity 2010!

# 3. Be Playful
Does Saint Paul rock? You betcha!

  • Party on with InterActivity 2010 Host Minnesota Children's Museum. Food, drinks, drums, dancing and rooftop escapades are just some of what you can expect at the museum's evening event, City Sights, Northern Lights and Big Fun!
  • Mix it up at the Science Museum of Minnesota Evening Reception. Refreshments on the museums's outdoor terrace overlooking the Mississippi River. More than 70,000 sq. ft. of amazing exhibits. Museum President and Storyteller Extraordinaire Eric Jolly caps off the evening with a traditional tale.
  • Walk on the wild side by taking Saint Paul's Notorious Past Tour and investigate the Wabasha Street Caves.
  • Museum hop for free; more than a dozen cultural institutions are participating in the Museum Open House Program.
  • Chill out at a one of several funky coffee shops along Saint Paul's Grand Avenue. Locals recommend Cafe Latte for its insanely delicious turtle cake.
  • Shop 'til you drop at Mall of America. Take the train or bus to the Mall, located less than 10 minutes from the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
