Accessing ACM Museum Data

ACM maintains a comprehensive database of statistical information on its member museums. This ACM data can be valuable for marketing, fundraising and general museum planning. All data is complied through ACM membership surveys.

Membership information is proprietary and intended to be used for a member institution's research purposes only. ACM requests that member institutions refrain from sharing the data with any other organization or individual without ACM's explicit consent. ACM relies on members to complete the survey questions in full to attain the most complete and accurate data; although every effort is made to guarantee accuracy, ACM is not responsible for errors in data content.

Members can access the data using three resources:

Query Report Service

ACM staff can generate a report of raw data from the ACM Query Database when you need information on a very specific
set of parameters. Requests for a Query Report are submitted online and are delivered via email as Excel spreadsheets.
Query Reports do not provide data analysis. Most query reports are completed within five business days, although
requests with multiple queries may take longer to complete. Please review the Query Report Service Guidelines below
as they have recently changed.

Query Report Service Guidelines

The ACM staff prepares Query Reports using information in the Query Database. The ACM Query Database is comprised
of information collected through the ACM Museum Membership Survey and reflects the same organization as the survey.
You can review the areas of the 2008 ACM Museum Membership Survey at the bottom of this page.

It is important to understand that one Query Report does not necessarily equate to one query. A single query
consists of either one data point or multiple related data points.
Please consult the list of Single Query Descriptions to
view examples of predetermined queries to help you estimate the number of queries your Query Report will consist of.
Members can request as many or as few queries per Query Report as desired. However, in order to protect the value
and integrity of the data of its members, ACM charges $50 a query beyond the number of free queries granted.

After you have submitted your online Query Report request form, ACM will confirm the type and number of queries in the
report you have specified as well as any fees in connection to the Query Report.

Query Report Fees

  • Open Museums are entitled to six (6) free queries per year.
  • Emerging Museums are entitled to three (3) free queries per year.
  • Corporate Leaders are entitled to three (3) free queries per year.
  • Corporate Supporters and Individual Consultants are entitled to one (1) free query per year.
  • Individual members, and members who have exceeded allotted benefits, are billed $50 per query.
  • Non-members are not eligible to use the Query Report Service.

Free queries do not rollover but must be used within the membership year.

When to Place a Query Report Request

  1. You are looking for information about more than five Open Children's Museum Members.

  2. You are looking for information not provided in the ACM Fact Sheet, Museum Online Directory nor the
    2008 Children's Museum Metrics Reports.

  3. You are looking for information about children's museums that share a commonality such as square footage,
    location, budget, etc...

Please Note: ACM only has access to data provided by ACM member museums in the ACM Museum Member Survey. ACM
does not have data about science and technology centers, art museums, history museum or the greater museum field.

Inside the ACM Membership Database

The database contains information reported by ACM members from the 2008 Membership Survey. ACM pulls the
data points from the survey to create queries for Query Reports. The survey areas below contain several queries of
compiled data points. Please refer to the Single Query Descriptions list to view examples of predetermined queries.

The 2008 ACM Museum Membership Survey collected data in the following six categories. Click on a below category
to view that area of the actual survey.
