The Family Literacy Involvement Program
(FLIP) helps develop early learners reading and comprehension
skills through family-centered activities designed to be explored
in the home.
Why is FLIP important?
Preliminary findings of an experimental study conducted by
the University of Texas indicates that FLIP Kits enrich family
interactions with a variety of interrelated activities and
also provide parents with valuable insights about the interests
and capabilities of their children.
How does FLIP work?
Designed to be circulated through public libraries, all 201
FLIP Kits are available in English and Spanish, with 15 available
in Vietnamese and Chinese. FLIP Kits encourage parents and
other caregivers to extend the reading experiences that they
share with their children. The hands-on activities in each
FLIP Kit reinforce important early learning concepts in a
readily accessible format.
How does my museum/library
become a FLIP Partner?
Museum and library partners were invited to submit
an application to become a FLIP Partner and participate
in the National Training and Implementation Workshop on May
18, 2011. Applications were due by
Oct 15.
Each National
Training and Implementation Awardee Team will receive:
Designation as the "official"
FLIP partner in your community with promotion on the official
FLIP Kits Web site, FLIPKits.org, launching September 9;
Twenty complete FLIP Kits for immediate
implementation in your community;
Complete and free access to design
plans for 432 Kits (201 in English and Spanish, 15 in Chinese
and Vietnamese);
Promotional materials and other
resources needed to announce the
availability of FLIP Kits and to encourage the public in
your community to participate;
Two all-expense-paid (max. $850/person)
trips to participate in the May 18, 2011, FLIP National
Training and Implementation Workshop in Houston; and
Relative exclusivity of FLIP implementation
in your community, meaning that FLIP materials will not
be provided by the Children's Museum of Houston to any other
organization within an acceptable, clearly defined circulation
range.
FLIP
is a multi-lingual interactive learning program designed
by the Childrens Museum of Houston in partnership
with Houston Public Library and the University of Texas
Childrens Learning Institute.
Major
funding for the initiative has been provided by the Institute
of Museum and Library Services.
