an exciting new hands-on exhibit developed in collaboration
with Hasbro, Inc., will premiere at the Betty Brinn Children's
Museum in the summer of 2008 and will then embark on a national

silly character, who becomes an astronaut, explorer, scientist

MR. POTATO HEAD's knack for wacky escapades and familiar personality
will engage children in adventures that are friendly, yet
exotic, while the comic appeal of the character will charm
adults and encourage them to play along.
The MR. POTATO HEAD character will lead
the way on amazing adventures into outer space, on a jungle
safari, on an archaeological dig, and under the sea. In addition
to building a variety of essential academic skills, the exhibit
encourages children to welcome new experiences with confidence,
curiosity and humor, to think about all they can be and do
and to always respect themselves and others.

| Description: |
Come castle folk! Come dance and play! Visitors playfully
explore the interconnectedness of community members in a setting
inspired by fantasy and history. From becoming a jester and
putting on a show, to helping the cook prepare a feast and
constructing a bench in the carpenter's workshop, children's
play and learning are supported by the exhibit's design, characters,
narrative, interactives, costumes and props. The exhibit is
targeted toward children ages 10 and younger, families, and
school groups. Each component of the exhibit invites the visitor
to experience community life through the perspective of one
of nine characters working together to throw a party in the
castle.
Key areas include:
- Exhibit Entry and Big Book: Lord Ben and Lady Evolent
welcome visitors, who can begin their adventure by reading
the story of The Amazing Castle and its inhabitants.
- The Keep: Toddlers create a miniature community in a castle-inspired
dollhouse, build their own fortress out of "stone"
blocks, and play with a castle busy wall.
- The Great Hall and Garden: Friends and family can take
a seat at the royal table while children prepare a mouthwatering
meal with Kipper the Cook. They'll select ingredients from
a larder stocked with bread, vegetables and fruits, and
choose a main course to prepare and cook in a cauldron at
the fireplace. They can join Posey the Gardener in the royal
garden to pick and plant vegetables and gather eggs from
a hen in the garden shed.
- Royal Puppet Theatre: Children and adults become castle
entertainers when they visit HiJinx the Jester in the Royal
Puppet Theatre to present a puppet show. Children can pick
out a fancy robe, pull up a throne and become the Lord or
Lady, or don the jester's costume and entertain the Lord
and Lady.
- The Tailor's Workshop: Visitors try their hand at repairing
and making clothing for all of the castle citizens with
Trim the Tailor. They can play a game, design costumes,
create their own outfits, and discover how silly their costumes
appear when they look at themselves in a distorted mirror!
- The Carpenter's Workshop: Children and adults can grab
a work apron and help Gable the Carpenter build a simple
table or chair using mortise and tenon construction, or
put together something of their own design.
- The Blacksmith's Workshop: Families join Synge the Blacksmith
to help her affix a metal patch to the hole in Kipper's
big iron cauldron. Children and adults can also pretend
to repair iron tools using a stone forge with glowing coals,
a water bucket, and Synge's anvil.
- The Dragon Tower: The Dragon Tower is home to Herald the
Dragon, who announces important information to the citizens
of The Amazing Castle. But Herald keeps falling asleep
and needs to be awakened frequently. Visitors can wake Herald
by matching each of the six electronic castle character
puzzle pieces with his or her appropriate tool or symbol.

| Description: |
The Childrens Museum of Pittsburgh partnered with the
Andy Warhol Museum to create The Art of Andy Warhol,
a unique, interactive exhibit featuring original Warhol silkscreen
prints and a working silkscreen studio.
In this exhibit, visitors experience the silk screen process
from beginning to end. After designing an original image out
of newsprint, young artists take their images to the silkscreen
bed, place them under the screen and assist staff in spreading
the ink across the screen with a squeegee. The screen is then
lifted and the original piece of art is complete.
The artwork includes Warhols Myth Series, prints of
fantasy characters from his childhood, and Toy paintings,
based on his passion for collecting toys. Other activities
include costumes inspired by the Myth Series characters, a
reading area with books on Andy Warhol and art, and original
tin toys from Warhols collection.

Adventures with Clifford The Big Red Dog transports
visitors to the world of Clifford, Emily Elizabeth and all
of the residents of Birdwell Island. Like tourists visiting
Birdwell Island, visitors will start their journey to the
exhibit aboard the Birdwell Island ferry, complete with seagull
sounds and clanking ship bells. Families take the captain's
seat and steer the ship's wheel as they disembark and enter
the world of Clifford and Emily Elizabeth.
All of the exhibit sites are environments based on locations
found on the PBS Kids Clifford The Big Red Dog television
series. The exhibit content and environments are targeted
toward ages 2-8, families and school groups and include:
- Exhibit Entry: A lighthouse leads the way for visitors
to enter the exhibit.
- Birdwell Island Ferry: Upon entering the exhibit, visitors
climb aboard the Birdwell Island ferry and try their hands
at steering the ferry as passengers hear ocean noises and
an announcement of their arrival to Birdwell Island.
- Samuel's Fish and Chips Shack: As visitors step inside
Samuel's restaurant, they step into the shoes of restaurant
workers by cooking, cleaning, serving food, and restocking
shelves. A cash register, order pads, and a menu promote
early literacy and early math skills.
- T-Bone's Beach Fun: Families visit T-Bone and his bone-shaped
sand box where they put together a sculpted sand castle
puzzle, dig for treasure of different shapes and sizes,
and play with plastic connectable fish from a treasure chest.
- Clifford and his doghouse: A giant Clifford invites visitors
to sit on his paw next to Emily Elizabeth or slide down
his tail. Visitors are encouraged to try their hand at keeping
Clifford's dog bowl full by loading dog food into his bowl
with a conveyor belt.
- Emily Elizabeth's Backyard Theater: Children don costumes
and step onstage in front of a Clifford backdrop to join
in the fun. Seating is arranged in front for audience members.
- Howard's Home: Visitors help out Emily Elizabeth's family
by doing some hands-on yard-care and tending to the flowers
in the garden.
- Cleo's Backyard: Cleo welcomes our youngest visitors to
her backyard - a small tot play land. Based on the items
found in Cleo's yard, the exhibit components encourage large-muscle
development and appropriate risk-taking.
- Birdwell Island Post Office: Visitors can deliver their
own hand-made letters or pre-addressed letters to the post
office and mailboxes throughout the exhibit.
- Author's Corner and Reading Area: This library includes
a cozy book nook with bookshelves filled with Clifford stories.
Visitors view video clips of Norman Bridwell and browse
through an art gallery to get an inside look at the development

- Build in Bobs Workshop Kids
and families can design and build in Bob the Builders
very own workshop. Children and adults will delight in drawing
their own blueprints and using kid-friendly versions of
tools and building materials to build their creations.
- Build the Vehicle Shelter - Be part of
the team, laying stones in the walls of the machine teams
shelter and building stalls for Roley, Scoop, Benny, Muck
and Scrambler to sleep.
- Decorate Wendys Caravan - Wendy
needs some help from the team to refurbish and decorate
her caravan and plant beautiful flowers.
- Work together at the Water Pump - Farmer
Pickles isnt the only one in Sunflower Valley that
knows that water conservation is important. Children can
explore the interactive water pump station and work as a
team to bring water to Sunflower Valley.

the science behind bubbles. Visitors create bubbles of different
shapes and sizes as they experiment with how they are formed,
the colors they produce and the amazing properties they have.
Bubbles encourages visitors to investigate the scientific
principles behind bubbles, including surface tension, evaporation
and light reflection. Visitors will build an understanding of
water, its unique properties and how to apply knowledge of these
properties in order to create specific results. Exploration
Station A large station with a variety of wands allows visitors
to explore different ways to create bubbles. Mega-Bubble Station
Stand inside a bubble. An oversized hoop allows visitors to
create gigantic bubbles. Bubble Wall Visitors try making large
bubble walls, as well as discover the interesting color patterns
that bubbles produce. Bubble Shapes Visitors experiment with
different shapes as they lower three-dimensional geometric shapes
into a trough of bubble solution and observe how these tools
can be used to make unusually shaped bubbles. |

| Description: |
Chagall for Children focuses on
the works of Marc Chagall. This pioneering exhibit is a unique
approach to introducing children to art through the life and
work of a master artist, helping children and adults alike
develop a greater understanding and appreciation of all forms
of artistic expression. The exhibit is designed to engage
visitors in the exploration of both art and the artist through
15 interactive, multi-sensory components. Each component features
one of Chagalls works with an accompanying hands-on
activity in a variety of media that encourages the visitor
to explore and work with specific art principals such as color,
composition, light and texture. Many stations are accompanied
with audio descriptions, highlighting information about the
artwork upon which the interactive is based. An extensive
selection of books about the artist is provided to encourage
further exploration and to stimulate literacy learning. Each
venue receives educational and marketing materials.
Chagall for Children was developed
by the Kohl Childrens Museum and premiered in July 1996
in Wilmette, IL. In 1998 the exhibit was adapted to travel
and has since visited ten other institutions across the country.
Responding to continuous requests and interest, the exhibit
has been completely rebuilt and upgraded. The tour beginning
January 2006 features a completely rebuilt exhibit.

Letting curiosity and inquiry be their guides, visitors explore
familiar buildings and locales from the Curious George book
series and PBS KIDS® television series in Curious George:
Let's Get Curious! The exhibit presents key concepts in
science, math, and engineering, which are woven and layered
throughout the exhibit. Activities invite visitors of all
ages to learn like George - through direct experience and
problem solving! Upon entry to the exhibit, visitors find
themselves on an urban street and are transported to the neighborhood
in which Curious George lives with his friend, The Man with
the Yellow Hat. Families find themselves surrounded by familiar
places and faces, while encountering new challenges and ideas.
The show's supporting characters appear throughout the exhibit,
helping to provide context, deliver parent and take-home messages,
and inject humor. Activities have multigenerational appeal
and are targeted toward children ages 3-7, families, and school
groups.
Key areas include:
- Exhibit Entry: Visitors find themselves
on an urban street and meet George who - with a bunch of
balloons in hand - is clinging by foot to the top of a traffic
light.
- Apartment Building: Families move George
on a pulley to help him wash the apartment windows. Inside,
they manipulate objects and explore the properties of light,
shadow, color, and shape to create dynamic displays in the
building's windows. In the lobby, visitors can open the
tenants' mailboxes to reveal different effects, games, and
mechanical toys.
- Sidewalk Produce: Stand Families sort
produce at a charming sidewalk produce stand and play the
roles of customer or salesperson as they explore shape,
sorting, weighing, and counting with colorful fruit and
vegetable props.
- Construction Site: Visitors encounter
a construction zone in the middle of George's neighborhood.
Oodles of materials invite children to design and build
structures, from small to tall, 2D to 3D. Children work
together to move materials using conveyer belts, pulleys,
and levers.
- Park: The park welcomes infants, toddlers,
and adults, providing a spot to rest, and special interactives
for the youngest visitors. A full-size huggable George is
here, too.
- Mini Golf: Visitors putt their way through
three miniature golf holes, experimenting with physics,
engineering, and math in the process.
- Rocket: Families can have their pictures
taken in front of a rocket façade ala a carnival
standy and can choose to e-mail the photo to their home
address.
- Farm: Visitors will experience the power
of wind and cause-and-effect as they use wind to move a
collection of windmills, whirligigs, windsocks, and wind
chimes. They can build their own whirligigs to test and
take home. Plush farm animals in pens are located just outside
the barn for children to care for and cuddle.
- Retrospective: Inside this museum, the
history of the Reys and their creative work will be told
through interactive displays of text and images, photos,
sketches, vintage and current merchandise and other artworks.

"Step Right Up, step right up...experience the strange,
the unexplainable, the UNSPEAKABLE underworld of our bizarre
beasts. All alive, all on stage! ENTER IF YOU DARE!
so says Dr. Entomo, the part-man, part-bug host ready
to take you on a journey of discovery.
Is it true? Are they real?! Let Dr. Entomo be your guide
as you explore the wonderful world of bugs in all their strange
splendor. Creatures that Glow-In-The-Dark, Two-Headed Devils
and Sumo-Wrestling Beetles challenge your sensibilities and
will fascinate visitors of all ages!
Displayed as a Circus Sideshow, this exhibit features tarantulas,
scorpions, centipedes and other "bugs" as a living
collection that acts as a vehicle for discussing their various
life habits and means of survival. Alter egos, masters of
disguise, chemical warfare and outright bluffing are a sampling
of the many ways in which bugs survive and are discussed throughout
the show.
With a focus on education and building an appreciation for
the complex lives these bugs lead, several interactive experiences
are presented to highlight some of the more unusual. For instance,
did you know that the Giant Vinegaroon got its name from the
fact that, when stressed, they emit a spray of acetic acid,
also known as vinegar? Pump the "Vinegar Extractor"
and smell what we're talking about. And what about those big,
shiny black scorpions? Activate the black light and watch
them glow an eerie green.
Suitable for Natural History Museums, Children's Museums,
Public Museums, Science Centers and any institution wanting
to capture the family audience, this exhibit is family-friendly
in its design and content and resonates well with kids of
all ages.
Outhouse Exhibit Services specializes in creating customized
insect exhibits, suitable for display at any type or size

Forest Journey: The Role of Wood in the Development of Civilization
by science writer John Perlin. It sheds new light on the history
of the use of wood throughout the world, on forest products
(from paper to livesaving pharmaceuticals) and on the relationship
between forests and the greenhouse effect. Although many acres
of forest are lost worldwide each year, A Forest Journey
will empower visitors to make a difference. This exhibition
will create awareness for responsible stewardship of forests
and the products they provide. Modular units offer multiple

| Description: |
Every
object in our world has a story of how it is made. How People
Make Things tells that story by linking familiar childhood
objects to a process of manufacturing that depends on people,
ideas and technology to transform raw materials into finished
products. This exhibit explores four manufacturing processes:
cut, mold, deform and assemble. Visitors learn about each process
through hands-on activities, Mister Rogers Factory Tour
videos, artifact representations of these processes and take-home
projects that extend learning and conversations beyond the museum
visit. Everyday products featured in the exhibit include 10,000
Crayola crayons in 90 colors, 10,000 springs, traffic lights,
cooking pans, sneakers, baseball bats, baseball gloves and matchbox
cars. Visitors move through the four different factory areas
to see how everyday products are manufactured. Visitors will
make a die cut box and a vacuum formed bowl, and watch a plastic
spoon being made by an injection molder. They can also try operating
a 3-axis mill, assemble a golf cart and see a robotic arm in
action. This exhibit provides the opportunity to try new things,
to think in new ways and to foster on-going curiosity. |

| Description: |
A small shed sets the scene for The Itsy Bitsy Spider
Rain Garden, featuring activities that help children explore
the principle of reclaiming and reusing rainwater and the
value of utilizing green practices in an urban setting. The
exhibit is designed to promote the development of important
school-readiness skills, including hand-eye coordination,
the ability to perform steps in sequence, and an understanding
of basic comparisons and directional terms (e.g., up/down,
right/left). Activities also help children experiment with
key math and science concepts, including spatial relationships,
object permanence and cause/effect.
- A series of lifting mechanisms, cranks and simple levers
(and the help of an itsy bitsy spider!) allow children to
guide an acrylic ball (raindrop) through the water cycle
and into a rain barrel for reuse in the pretend garden.
- Children can plant fabric flowers and vegetables in the
garden beds furrows using pretend gardening tools,
kid-sized gloves and kneeling pads.
- Interactive graphics encourage children to explore the
concepts of groundwater and runoff.
The Itsy Bitsy Spider Rain Garden is a beautifully
finished and fully functional prototype developed by the Betty
Brinn Childrens Museum (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) to promote
its new traveling exhibit, Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl:
Home Sweet Home (available summer 2009). The Rain Garden
was created for display at the annual Association of Childrens
Museums national conference (April 2008) and received high
praise from our peers for its educational content, engaging
activities and important environmental messages. The Rain
Garden will be on display in booth 126 at the Association
of Science and Technology Centers annual conference
(Oct. 18-21, 2008) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and will
be available for purchase/delivery immediately after the conference.

Jump to Japan: Discovering Culture through
Popular Art reflects the complexity of Japan, where ancient
Buddhist temples watch over the shinkasen (bullet train)
as it speeds between cities, and where a tiny space between
tall buildings on a crowded city street can be the perfect
place for a calming water garden.
This exhibit invites visitors to discover
aspects of Japanese culture by introducing them to people,
things, situations and stories depicted in works of Japanese
art. At the heart of the exhibit are environments and activities
that present a broad depiction of Japan traditional
and contemporary, urban and rural, past and present, fantastic
and realistic.
Jump to Japan: Discovering Culture through
Popular Art consists of three main activity areas, each
based on a work of art, artistic form or tradition. The focus
areas are:
- Fantastic Animation,
featuring film animation
- Manga Mania, organized
around manga (Japanese comics) and anime (Japanese
animation)
- Artful Traditions,
based on woodblock printing and scrolls
Kids hop on the magical Cat Bus from Hayao
Miyazakis film My Neighbor Totoro. Visitors can
be a shopkeeper or customer in a modern manga store and create
their own manga drawings and animation. Visitors take off
their shoes and step into a traditional tatami (woven floor
covered) room for a tea party, try on kimono, yukata
or happi (traditional Japanese clothing) and play the
ancient card game karuta.

| Description: |
Kids Design Glass is an interactive exhibition for
the whole family that celebrates the creativity of children.
Fifty-two glass sculptures, each designed by a child and made
by the Museum of Glass Hot Shop Team, form the basis of the
exhibition. Each piece is created and assembled under the
direction of its young designer. Emphasizing the importance
of imaginative play in a high tech world, the whimsical and
endearing glass sculptures are accompanied by a creativity
station packed with hands-on activities that encourage children
to engage their creative minds. Accompanying curriculum and
a gallery guide provide simple and entertaining lesson plans
in science and art.
A fully illustrated catalog, published in association with
the University of Washington Press, provides important perspectives
for parents on imaginative play by renowned author and scholar,
Dr. Susan Linn. Packaged with the catalog is a storybook for
early readers about the creation of Pip, one of the exhibitions
glass creatures, and an educational DVD that provides further
resources for the young artist. Each venue is connected to
the art of glass making in the Museum's Hot Shop through a
live-stream broadcast from the museums website (www.museumofglass.org).
For an additional fee, the museums Mobile Hot Shop
can accompany the exhibition for a period of time and demonstrate
the art of glass making onsite. The fiftytwo glass sculptures
in the exhibition are three-dimensional realizations of the
joy of early childhood creativity. Each sculpture originated
from a drawing submitted in the Museums Kids Design
Glass program. Each month, hundreds of drawings are submitted
by children ages 12 and under who visit the museum. The Hot
Shop artists and education department staff select one drawing
per month, and the child and his/her family are invited back
to the museum to watch and direct the glass artists as they
turn the design into a work of art.
Two pieces are madeone for the child and one for the
Museums collection. The Hot Shop audience loves this
magical process, supporting the child with much applause and
encouragement. For some children the experience has been life
changing. Partners in the program have included Mary Bridge
Childrens Hospital in Tacoma, WA; Dornbecker Childrens
Hospital in Portland, OR; local chapters of the Boys and Girls
Club of America and scouting programs. The sculptures require
protection in vitrines and are presented and photographed
as high art paying homage to the importance of play and imagination.

Let's Play Railway!, based on BRIO's
classic wooden toy train, is now available for purchase and
rent. Let's Play Railway! offers the BRIO mark of
excellence, representing quality to adults and endless play
possibilities for children.
Little engineers will have fun using levers, dials, buttons
and cranks that trigger realistic sound effects in the Engine
cab. Turning the crankshaft will make colorful characters
pop in and out of pretend pistons that power the train on
its imaginary journey, and the Engine's cowcatcher is a xylophone
where children can play familiar tunes or create musical patterns.
The Cattle Wagon carries precious cargo a pretend pony
and cow for children to tend. Children can harvest corn from
the field, store it in a kid-sized silo, or feed it to their
new farm friends. A feedbag, brushes, buckets, a milking stool
and other props complete the setting. While little farm hands
are hard at work, they can listen and sing along to the tune
of "Old MacDonald." A Caboose at the end of the
line includes a roly-poly wheel entrance and a mirror where
children can see themselves tumble.
Once inside, children can pull levers and turn wheels to guide
a ball along a special track with a surprise ending! Play
tables featuring BRIO's popular Wooden Railway and Builder
Systems® and activities built into the train's giant wheels
complement the exhibit and provide endless opportunities for
play. Each car features signage (English and Spanish) that
provides adults with information about the educational value
of the activities and ways to enhance a child's experience
during their make-believe ride on Let's Play Railway!

| Description: |
An archeological team has mysteriously disappeared from a
dig site in Palenque, Mexico. They had been investigating
a long-standing rumor that a priceless jade medallion is buried
in the temple there. However, something horrifying has scared
them off. Luckily, in their haste to escape, they managed
to leave behind a video with clues and a warning to all who
come after.
The original team has left behind valuable information in
the archeology, biology and astromathematics field stations
that they constructed.Student Archeologists must uncover the
mystery of the dig site and find the priceless treasure.
Your visitors will:
- Get a taste of what it's like to be an archaelogist, biologist,
or astromathematician.
- Explore the world of the ancient Maya.
- Have fun learning about science, language and history
with hands-on immersive activities.
Tomb Area: Major architectural element of the exhibit. The
Tomb is enclosed on three sides, with an inner chamber and
an outer, more dimly lit hallway (wide enough to meet ADA
standards) along the left side and the rear of the structure.
Three free-standing walls form the exterior of the hallway,
and two free-standing wall structures delineate the central,
interior chamber of the Tomb.
Examine the Bones/Sarcophagus Rubbing: Visitors examine and
identify aspects of a human skeleton using calipers, tape
measures, and other tools. They determine that the person
was male and died of a blow to the skull received during a
war. They make a rubbing of a glyph on the sarcophagus lid.
Observatory: At the observatory, visitors can find out how
the Maya studied the stars and how important they were in
their culture. As you exit the observatory, you can also learn
about four gods that were very important to the Maya, the
Maize God, the Rain God, the Death God, and the Great Rainbow
Goddess.
Archeology Tent: Visitors will learn more about artifacts
they find and what they mean. There are several clues to find
along the way, such as a ball player and a conch shell near
the tomb. Visitors can also learn how to translate Mayan glyphs
into English.
Astromathematics Tent: visitors find out all about the Mayan
counting system, and learn how the Mayans built temples to
line up with the suns rays.
Biology Tent: Visitors can learn about the creatures they
may encounter in an ancient Mayan civilization. Learn to identify
several venemous creatures, including the scorpion (highly
venomous - seek help at once!), black widow (painful but not
often fatal) and the Far-de-Lance (whose bite will cause serious
pain and often death). Visitors also learn what the Maya grew
and ate.
Treasure Revealed: Visitors break the code, view the mystery
medallionand get an additional surprise. Touching a
preset sequence of the four code glyphs triggers the light
effect that reveals the interior of the vault. The effect
is visible only to the person standing directly in front of
the opening. The light stays on for approximately 15-20 seconds.
The objects in the vault are invisible when the light is not
on.

Visitors enter Once Upon a Time
through a gigantic storybook that transports them into an
enchanted world. The exhibit includes seven-foot-tall books
that include illustrations from the librarys collection
and serve as backdrops for each of the featured fairy tales.
Each area includes both English and Spanish texts and labels;
reproductions of rare illustrations; immersive environments
complete with objects for children to manipulate; opportunities
for dramatic play; and a summary of the fairy tale and the
universal message that it communicates.
Once Upon a Time
features these timeless stories:
- Cinderella, or the Little
Glass Slipper - The exhibit includes a coach that children
can enter; a magic wand; a hearth where kids can engage
in imaginative play; and a glass slipper to try on.
- Jack and the Beanstalk - This
exhibit gives visitors the chance to scramble up a vine
and then slide down into the ogres lair; play the
gigantic ogres harp and hear his booming voice; hunt
and peck in the coop for the hens golden egg; count
golden coins; climb onto the ogres massive stool;
and hide from the monster in a kid-sized cubbyhole.
- Lon Po Po - This Chinese folk
tale is essentially the same as Little Red Riding Hood and
illustrates how fairy tales transcend cultures. This exhibit
has both the English and Chinese versions of the story,
as well as a basket on a pulley so children can hoist the
wolf to his doom; play with puzzles; and try on both traditional
Asian and English costumes.
- Beauty and the Beast - The exhibit
invites children to set the Beasts banquet table;
compose a minuet on a harpsichord; enjoy sensory experiences,
such as feeling the textured fabrics in Beautys dresser;
and look at a magical mirror to see the Beast transform
into a prince.
- Thumbelina, or Little Tiny
- Watch natures seasons change; manipulate a scene
to see Thumbelina carried away by a bird and a beetle.
- The Shoemaker and the Elves -
Children get the chance to assemble and stitch together
pairs of shoes; pound nails at the shoemakers bench;
transform the scene from day to night; and measure their
own feet.
- Anansi and the Talking Melon -
Visitors to this section can immerse themselves in a jungle
environment and sit on the Monkey Kings throne; balance
on a jungle log; try on various animal costumes; and hunt
for Anansi hidden in a melon patch.

The Power
of Documentation: Childrens Learning Revealed
is a dynamic thought-provoking window into the lives of children
and teachers in early education environments. Through photos,
childrens work, anecdotal notes and stories the viewer
experiences young children learning and making sense of their
world. Reflections by teachers and administrators (in writing
and on video) reveal the role of documentation and collegial
support in creating communities of learning for children,
parents and teachers. The exhibit provides viewers with the
opportunities to: Focus on learner outcomes by seeing how
active, engaged learning experiences enable children to meet
standards.
Components identify
learner outcomes used in the early childhood programs represented
including Head Start Outcomes, Developmental Milestones, Work
Sampling System Performance Indicators, Individualized Educational
Plans (IEP) and Illinois early Learning Standards. Value diversity
by seeing how documentation and other best practices can be
used effectively with all young children in real-life settings.
Documentation in the exhibit comes from diverse early childhood
(toddler through kindergarten) settings as well as urban,
suburban, and rural programs. It includes children with diverse
racial, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. Reflect and
discuss what they see with other learners and educators. The
exhibit encourages viewers to move beyond viewing to reflect
on and communicate about what they are seeing. Clipboards
for recording thoughts are provided; a reflection area near
the end of the exhibit encourages viewers to share their own
thoughts and ideas. Begin documenting in their centers and
schools.
The exhibit concludes
with a short video of teachers and directors talking about
the power of documentation in their lives and in their professional
learning communities, along with advice for starting documentation
in their programs. The exhibit presents documentation as a
practice that every teacher can implement right away by using
simple steps and available resources.

2006 issue of Family Fun magazine, Team Up!
was rated the best hands-on traveling exhibit for families.
In this exhibition,
visitors are invited to do such things as:
- Discover their pitching speed in a radar-equipped
booth.
- Experiment with balance using pommel-horse
and balance beam interactives.
- Make a perfect bounce pass to a "teammate"
located on the other side of a barrier.
- Shoot a marble-sized basketball through
a tiny hoop while learning about trajectory angles.
Team Up! Explore Science & Sports
was developed by Discovery Center Museum and the Family Museum
of Arts and Science as part of the TEAMS (Traveling Exhibits
at Museums of Science) Collaborative, with major funding from
the National Science Foundation. As much as possible, Team
Up! components have been made accessible to all visitors.

American Indian (Evanston, IL)
|
| Description: |
The Eagle Books exhibit features
the 65 original watercolors used in diabetes prevention stories
for Native American children and all those interested in the
road to healthy living. Targeting children ages four to nine,
the stories are universal and have a wide appeal. For thousands
of years, Native Americans have told stories to pass on their
history, knowledge, and culture to future generations.
In the Eagle Books, a wise
eagle is the tribal elder, who teaches traditional ways of
health that children can remember and retell in their homes,
schools, and communities.
- Through the Eyes of the Eagle
introduces the characters of Mr. Eagle and Rain That Dances,
the boy Mr. Eagle befriends. Mr. Eagle reminds the young
boy of the healthy ways of his ancestors.
- In Knees Lifted High, Mr. Eagle encourages
Rain That Dances and his best friend, Thunder Cloud, to
be active every day.
- Plate Full of Color introduces three
new characters: Little Hummingbird, Simon, and Miss Rabbit.
Miss Rabbit describes her love of the bounties of Mother
Earth, and teaches the value of eating a variety of colorful
and healthy foods.
- Tricky Treats introduces the character
of the trickster, Coyote, who proves to be unsuccessful
at tricking the children into eating.
The stories were written by Georgia Perez
and illustrated by Patrick Rolo (Bad River Ban of Ojibwe,
Wisconsin) and Lisa A Fifield (Oneida Tribe, Wisconsin). The
series was developed by the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention in collaboration with the Tribal Leaders Diabetes
Committee and the Indian Health Service. The Eagle Books
have been widely distributed in Native communities and
across the United States with the help of many tribal leaders
and organizations from all directions: north, south, east,
and west. Now, the messages of the elders are reaching a broader
audience through the Eagle Books exhibit.
-
The exhibit is comprised of 65 framed watercolor and
gouache illustrations on paper. In addition, the exhibit
includes three introductory panels, one credit panel,
two banners, four book title panels, and book text labels.
An optional 2-D animated DVD of the stories is also available.
-
Exhibit Fees, and Other Requirements: There is no rental
fee for this exhibit. Host institutions pay one-way, pro-rated
shipping. In addition, each host institution must undertake
a minimum of two public programs in conjunction with the
exhibit, and provide documentation to CDC.
-
Space Requirements: To mount the
complete exhibit of all four books, which includes 60
book illustrations, 5 studies, introductory and credit
texts, and banners, requires approximately 250 running
feet. Host institutions may select to choose to install
a minimum of two books with title signage, book text,
and introductory and credit panels, depending upon available
space. However, each book must be exhibited in its entirety
and in order with the corresponding book texts.

| Description: |
Lied Discovery Childrens Museum has
developed a traveling exhibit that provides 8 to 12-year-old
children with a balanced introduction to the plight of refugees,
and people of all ages an inspiring learning experience and
awareness about the importance of human rights.
Some additional learning
goals based around the exhibit include:
- Increase understanding
among school-aged children, teachers, and youth leaders
about human rights and the lives of refugee children and
their families.
- Support parents,
caregivers, and teachers in their crucial role of facilitating
childrens learning through programs, resource materials,
and modeling.
- Encourage children
of diverse backgrounds and abilities to play together while
learning about the issues of conflict.
- Nurture and promote
interaction among children and adults about these complex
issues.
- Support community
programming efforts of local exhibit venues.
This creative and
educational exhibition was developed in partnership with Lied
Discovery Childrens Museum and international aid organizations
including UNHCR, the UN refugee agency. Philanthropist Pam
Omidyar helped conceive the exhibit and personally provided
core funding. We hope children and other visitors will
take away from the exhibition a sense of empathy and insight
into the lives of refugee children around the world,
said Linda Quinn, Executive Director of Las Vegas Lied
Discovery Childrens Museum. This exhibition will
allow them to walk in the shoes of refugee children and reflect
on issues such as losing a home and human rights in a creative,
educational and interactive way.
