  • Fall 2009
  • Spring 2012
  • Summer 2010
  • Fall 2010
Description:

Come castle folk! Come dance and play! Visitors playfully explore the interconnectedness of community members in a setting inspired by fantasy and history. From becoming a jester and putting on a show, to helping the cook prepare a feast and constructing a bench in the carpenter's workshop, children's play and learning are supported by the exhibit's design, characters, narrative, interactives, costumes and props. The exhibit is targeted toward children ages 10 and younger, families, and school groups. Each component of the exhibit invites the visitor to experience community life through the perspective of one of nine characters working together to throw a party in the castle.

Key areas include:

  • Exhibit Entry and Big Book: Lord Ben and Lady Evolent welcome visitors, who can begin their adventure by reading the story of The Amazing Castle and its inhabitants.
  • The Keep: Toddlers create a miniature community in a castle-inspired dollhouse, build their own fortress out of "stone" blocks, and play with a castle busy wall.
  • The Great Hall and Garden: Friends and family can take a seat at the royal table while children prepare a mouthwatering meal with Kipper the Cook. They'll select ingredients from a larder stocked with bread, vegetables and fruits, and choose a main course to prepare and cook in a cauldron at the fireplace. They can join Posey the Gardener in the royal garden to pick and plant vegetables and gather eggs from a hen in the garden shed.
  • Royal Puppet Theatre: Children and adults become castle entertainers when they visit HiJinx the Jester in the Royal Puppet Theatre to present a puppet show. Children can pick out a fancy robe, pull up a throne and become the Lord or Lady, or don the jester's costume and entertain the Lord and Lady.
  • The Tailor's Workshop: Visitors try their hand at repairing and making clothing for all of the castle citizens with Trim the Tailor. They can play a game, design costumes, create their own outfits, and discover how silly their costumes appear when they look at themselves in a distorted mirror!
  • The Carpenter's Workshop: Children and adults can grab a work apron and help Gable the Carpenter build a simple table or chair using mortise and tenon construction, or put together something of their own design.
  • The Blacksmith's Workshop: Families join Synge the Blacksmith to help her affix a metal patch to the hole in Kipper's big iron cauldron. Children and adults can also pretend to repair iron tools using a stone forge with glowing coals, a water bucket, and Synge's anvil.
  • The Dragon Tower: The Dragon Tower is home to Herald the Dragon, who announces important information to the citizens of The Amazing Castle. But Herald keeps falling asleep and needs to be awakened frequently. Visitors can wake Herald by matching each of the six electronic castle character puzzle pieces with his or her appropriate tool or symbol.

Each component features one of Chagall’s works with an accompanying hands-on activity in a variety of media that encourages the visitor to explore and work with specific art principals such as color, composition, light and texture. Many stations are accompanied with audio descriptions, highlighting information about the artwork upon which the interactive is based. An extensive selection of books about the artist is provided to encourage further exploration and to stimulate literacy learning. Each venue receives educational and marketing materials.

Chagall for Children was developed by the Kohl Children’s Museum and premiered in July 1996 in Wilmette, IL. In 1998 the exhibit was adapted to travel and has since visited ten other institutions across the country. Responding to continuous requests and interest, the exhibit has been completely rebuilt and upgraded. The tour beginning January 2006 features a completely rebuilt exhibit.

"Step Right Up, step right up...experience the strange, the unexplainable, the UNSPEAKABLE underworld of our bizarre beasts. All alive, all on stage! ENTER IF YOU DARE!” —so says Dr. Entomo, the part-man, part-bug host ready to take you on a journey of discovery.

Is it true? Are they real?! Let Dr. Entomo be your guide as you explore the wonderful world of bugs in all their strange splendor. Creatures that Glow-In-The-Dark, Two-Headed Devils and Sumo-Wrestling Beetles challenge your sensibilities and will fascinate visitors of all ages!

Displayed as a Circus Sideshow, this exhibit features tarantulas, scorpions, centipedes and other "bugs" as a living collection that acts as a vehicle for discussing their various life habits and means of survival. Alter egos, masters of disguise, chemical warfare and outright bluffing are a sampling of the many ways in which bugs survive and are discussed throughout the show.

With a focus on education and building an appreciation for the complex lives these bugs lead, several interactive experiences are presented to highlight some of the more unusual. For instance, did you know that the Giant Vinegaroon got its name from the fact that, when stressed, they emit a spray of acetic acid, also known as vinegar? Pump the "Vinegar Extractor" and smell what we're talking about. And what about those big, shiny black scorpions? Activate the black light and watch them glow an eerie green.

Suitable for Natural History Museums, Children's Museums, Public Museums, Science Centers and any institution wanting to capture the family audience, this exhibit is family-friendly in its design and content and resonates well with kids of all ages.

Everyday products featured in the exhibit include 10,000 Crayola crayons in 90 colors, 10,000 springs, traffic lights, cooking pans, sneakers, baseball bats, baseball gloves and matchbox cars. Visitors move through the four different factory areas to see how everyday products are manufactured. Size (in square feet) : 43 sq. ft.
Type of Exhibit: Hands-on play for children ages 3 to 8.
Description:

A small shed sets the scene for The Itsy Bitsy Spider Rain Garden, featuring activities that help children explore the principle of reclaiming and reusing rainwater and the value of utilizing green practices in an urban setting. The exhibit is designed to promote the development of important school-readiness skills, including hand-eye coordination, the ability to perform steps in sequence, and an understanding of basic comparisons and directional terms (e.g., up/down, right/left). Activities also help children experiment with key math and science concepts, including spatial relationships, object permanence and cause/effect.

Type of Exhibit: Japanese culture, traditional and modern art

  • Fall 2009
  • Spring 2010
  • Fall 2010
  • Spring 2011
Description:

Jump to Japan: Discovering Culture through Popular Art reflects the complexity of Japan, where ancient Buddhist temples watch over the shinkasen (bullet train) as it speeds between cities, and where a tiny space between tall buildings on a crowded city street can be the perfect place for a calming water garden.

This exhibit invites visitors to discover aspects of Japanese culture by introducing them to people, things, situations and stories depicted in works of Japanese art. At the heart of the exhibit are environments and activities that present a broad depiction of Japan — traditional and contemporary, urban and rural, past and present, fantastic and realistic.

Jump to Japan: Discovering Culture through Popular Art consists of three main activity areas, each based on a work of art, artistic form or tradition. The focus areas are:

  1. Fantastic Animation, featuring film animation
  2. Manga Mania, organized around manga (Japanese comics) and anime (Japanese animation)
  3. Artful Traditions, based on woodblock printing and scrolls

Kids hop on the magical Cat Bus from Hayao Miyazaki’s film My Neighbor Totoro. Visitors can be a shopkeeper or customer in a modern manga store and create their own manga drawings and animation. Visitors take off their shoes and step into a traditional tatami (woven floor covered) room for a tea party, try on kimono, yukata or happi (traditional Japanese clothing) and play the ancient card game karuta.

Title: Kids Design Glass
Date Posted: 5/13/2009
Producing Museum/Organization: Museum of Glass
Price of Exhibit Rental: $30,000
Size (in square feet) : 3,000 sq. ft.
Type of Exhibit: art
Length of Rental: 4 to 6 months
Exhibit Schedule:

Venue Confirmed:

  • October 31, 2009 - October 3, 2010: Museum of Glass (Tacoma, WA)
Description:

Kids Design Glass is an interactive exhibition for the whole family that celebrates the creativity of children. Fifty-two glass sculptures, each designed by a child and made by the Museum of Glass Hot Shop Team, form the basis of the exhibition. Each piece is created and assembled under the direction of its young designer. Emphasizing the importance of imaginative play in a high tech world, the whimsical and endearing glass sculptures are accompanied by a creativity station packed with hands-on activities that encourage children to engage their creative minds. Accompanying curriculum and a gallery guide provide simple and entertaining lesson plans in science and art.

A fully illustrated catalog, published in association with the University of Washington Press, provides important perspectives for parents on imaginative play by renowned author and scholar, Dr. Susan Linn. Packaged with the catalog is a storybook for early readers about the creation of Pip, one of the exhibition’s glass creatures, and an educational DVD that provides further resources for the young artist. Each venue is connected to the art of glass making in the Museum's Hot Shop through a live-stream broadcast from the museum’s website (www.museumofglass.org).

For an additional fee, the museum’s Mobile Hot Shop can accompany the exhibition for a period of time and demonstrate the art of glass making onsite. The fifty–two glass sculptures in the exhibition are three-dimensional realizations of the joy of early childhood creativity. Each sculpture originated from a drawing submitted in the Museum’s Kids Design Glass program. Each month, hundreds of drawings are submitted by children ages 12 and under who visit the museum. The Hot Shop artists and education department staff select one drawing per month, and the child and his/her family are invited back to the museum to watch and direct the glass artists as they turn the design into a work of art.

Two pieces are made—one for the child and one for the Museum’s collection. The Hot Shop audience loves this magical process, supporting the child with much applause and encouragement. For some children the experience has been life changing. Partners in the program have included Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma, WA; Dornbecker Children’s Hospital in Portland, OR; local chapters of the Boys and Girls Club of America and scouting programs. The sculptures require protection in vitrines and are presented and photographed as high art paying homage to the importance of play and imagination.

Turning the crankshaft will make colorful characters pop in and out of pretend pistons that power the train on its imaginary journey, and the Engine's cowcatcher is a xylophone where children can play familiar tunes or create musical patterns. The Cattle Wagon carries precious cargo – a pretend pony and cow for children to tend. Children can harvest corn from the field, store it in a kid-sized silo, or feed it to their new farm friends. A feedbag, brushes, buckets, a milking stool and other props complete the setting. While little farm hands are hard at work, they can listen and sing along to the tune of "Old MacDonald." A Caboose at the end of the line includes a roly-poly wheel entrance and a mirror where children can see themselves tumble.

Once inside, children can pull levers and turn wheels to guide a ball along a special track with a surprise ending! Play tables featuring BRIO's popular Wooden Railway and Builder Systems® and activities built into the train's giant wheels complement the exhibit and provide endless opportunities for play. Each car features signage (English and Spanish) that provides adults with information about the educational value of the activities and ways to enhance a child's experience during their make-believe ride on Let's Play Railway!

Mystery of the Mayan Medallion
Date Posted: 2/9/2009
Producing Museum/Organization: Arkansas Discovery Network, Museum of Discovery
Price of Exhibit Rental: $35,000
Size (in square feet) : 2,000 - 3,000 sq. ft.
Type of Exhibit: Science, Archeology, Culture, Interactive
Length of Rental: 3 months
Exhibit Schedule:
Available in June 2009
Description:

An archeological team has mysteriously disappeared from a dig site in Palenque, Mexico. They had been investigating a long-standing rumor that a priceless jade medallion is buried in the temple there. However, something horrifying has scared them off. Luckily, in their haste to escape, they managed to leave behind a video with clues and a warning to all who come after.

The original team has left behind valuable information in the archeology, biology and astromathematics field stations that they constructed.Student Archeologists must uncover the mystery of the dig site and find the priceless treasure.

Your visitors will:

  • Get a taste of what it's like to be an archaelogist, biologist, or astromathematician.
  • Explore the world of the ancient Maya.
  • Have fun learning about science, language and history with hands-on immersive activities.

Tomb Area: Major architectural element of the exhibit. The Tomb is enclosed on three sides, with an inner chamber and an outer, more dimly lit hallway (wide enough to meet ADA standards) along the left side and the rear of the structure. Three free-standing walls form the exterior of the hallway, and two free-standing wall structures delineate the central, interior chamber of the Tomb.

Examine the Bones/Sarcophagus Rubbing: Visitors examine and identify aspects of a human skeleton using calipers, tape measures, and other tools. They determine that the person was male and died of a blow to the skull received during a war. They make a rubbing of a glyph on the sarcophagus lid.

Observatory: At the observatory, visitors can find out how the Maya studied the stars and how important they were in their culture. As you exit the observatory, you can also learn about four gods that were very important to the Maya, the Maize God, the Rain God, the Death God, and the Great Rainbow Goddess.

Archeology Tent: Visitors will learn more about artifacts they find and what they mean. There are several clues to find along the way, such as a ball player and a conch shell near the tomb. Visitors can also learn how to translate Mayan glyphs into English.

Astromathematics Tent: visitors find out all about the Mayan counting system, and learn how the Mayans built temples to line up with the suns rays.

Biology Tent: Visitors can learn about the creatures they may encounter in an ancient Mayan civilization. Learn to identify several venemous creatures, including the scorpion (highly venomous - seek help at once!), black widow (painful but not often fatal) and the Far-de-Lance (whose bite will cause serious pain and often death). Visitors also learn what the Maya grew and ate.

Treasure Revealed: Visitors break the code, view the mystery medallion—and get an additional surprise. Touching a preset sequence of the four code glyphs triggers the light effect that reveals the interior of the vault. The effect is visible only to the person standing directly in front of the opening. The light stays on for approximately 15-20 seconds. The objects in the vault are invisible when the light is not on.

The Power of Documentation: Children’s Learning Revealed is a dynamic thought-provoking window into the lives of children and teachers in early education environments. Through photos, children’s work, anecdotal notes and stories the viewer experiences young children learning and making sense of their world. Reflections by teachers and administrators (in writing and on video) reveal the role of documentation and collegial support in creating communities of learning for children, parents and teachers. The exhibit provides viewers with the opportunities to: Focus on learner outcomes by seeing how active, engaged learning experiences enable children to meet standards.

Value diversity by seeing how documentation and other best practices can be used effectively with all young children in real-life settings. Documentation in the exhibit comes from diverse early childhood (toddler through kindergarten) settings as well as urban, suburban, and rural programs. It includes children with diverse racial, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. Reflect and discuss what they see with other learners and educators. The exhibit encourages viewers to move beyond viewing to reflect on and communicate about what they are seeing. Clipboards for recording thoughts are provided; a reflection area near the end of the exhibit encourages viewers to share their own thoughts and ideas. Begin documenting in their centers and schools.

Little mechanics will love working in the Super Service Center! The Car:

  • Under the Hood: Kids will trigger a variety of sound effects as they change the air filter, add fluids (glug, glug!) and check the battery and oil.
  • The Creeper: The car is mounted on a lift so children can slide underneath on a creeper to change the “rusty” muffler and tailpipe.
  • Tire Rotation: Children can change two of the car’s tires using lug nuts and a realistic-sounding pneumatic drill.
  • License to Drive: A variety of colorful personalized license plates can be changed on both the front and the back of the car.

Size (in square feet) : Minimum of 1,200 square feet, depending upon the configuration.
Type of Exhibit: Healthy choices, story-telling, Native American
Length of Rental: 12 weeks

Venue Confirmed:

  • October 2008 - January 2009: National Museum of the American Indian (Washignton, DC) and National Museum of the American Indian, George Gustave Heye Center (New York, NY)
  • February 11, 2009 - May 11, 2009: Mithcell Museum of the American Indian (Evanston, IL)
Description:

The Eagle Books exhibit features the 65 original watercolors used in diabetes prevention stories for Native American children and all those interested in the road to healthy living. Targeting children ages four to nine, the stories are universal and have a wide appeal. For thousands of years, Native Americans have told stories to pass on their history, knowledge, and culture to future generations.

In the Eagle Books, a wise eagle is the tribal elder, who teaches traditional ways of health that children can remember and retell in their homes, schools, and communities.

  • Through the Eyes of the Eagle introduces the characters of Mr. Eagle and Rain That Dances, the boy Mr. Eagle befriends. Mr. Eagle reminds the young boy of the healthy ways of his ancestors.
  • In Knees Lifted High, Mr. Eagle encourages Rain That Dances and his best friend, Thunder Cloud, to be active every day.
  • Plate Full of Color introduces three new characters: Little Hummingbird, Simon, and Miss Rabbit. Miss Rabbit describes her love of the bounties of Mother Earth, and teaches the value of eating a variety of colorful and healthy foods.
  • Tricky Treats introduces the character of the trickster, Coyote, who proves to be unsuccessful at tricking the children into eating.

The stories were written by Georgia Perez and illustrated by Patrick Rolo (Bad River Ban of Ojibwe, Wisconsin) and Lisa A Fifield (Oneida Tribe, Wisconsin). The series was developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in collaboration with the Tribal Leaders Diabetes Committee and the Indian Health Service. The Eagle Books have been widely distributed in Native communities and across the United States with the help of many tribal leaders and organizations from all directions: north, south, east, and west. Now, the messages of the elders are reaching a broader audience through the Eagle Books exhibit.

  • The exhibit is comprised of 65 framed watercolor and gouache illustrations on paper. In addition, the exhibit includes three introductory panels, one credit panel, two banners, four book title panels, and book text labels. An optional 2-D animated DVD of the stories is also available.

  • Exhibit Fees, and Other Requirements: There is no rental fee for this exhibit. Host institutions pay one-way, pro-rated shipping. In addition, each host institution must undertake a minimum of two public programs in conjunction with the exhibit, and provide documentation to CDC.

  • Space Requirements: To mount the complete exhibit of all four books, which includes 60 book illustrations, 5 studies, introductory and credit texts, and banners, requires approximately 250 running feet. Host institutions may select to choose to install a minimum of two books with title signage, book text, and introductory and credit panels, depending upon available space. However, each book must be exhibited in its entirety and in order with the corresponding book texts.

Lied Discovery Children’s Museum has developed a traveling exhibit that provides 8 to 12-year-old children with a balanced introduction to the plight of refugees, and people of all ages an inspiring learning experience and awareness about the importance of human rights.

Some additional learning goals based around the exhibit include:

  • Increase understanding among school-aged children, teachers, and youth leaders about human rights and the lives of refugee children and their families.
  • Support parents, caregivers, and teachers in their crucial role of facilitating children’s learning through programs, resource materials, and modeling.
  • Encourage children of diverse backgrounds and abilities to play together while learning about the issues of conflict.
  • Nurture and promote interaction among children and adults about these complex issues.
  • Support community programming efforts of local exhibit venues.

This creative and educational exhibition was developed in partnership with Lied Discovery Children’s Museum and international aid organizations including UNHCR, the UN refugee agency. Philanthropist Pam Omidyar helped conceive the exhibit and personally provided core funding. “We hope children and other visitors will take away from the exhibition a sense of empathy and insight into the lives of refugee children around the world,” said Linda Quinn, Executive Director of Las Vegas’ Lied Discovery Children’s Museum. “This exhibition will allow them to walk in the shoes of refugee children and reflect on issues such as losing a home and human rights in a creative, educational and interactive way.”
