What do FLIP Kits look like? What
do they include?
Each FLIP Kit contains a children's
book, an activity guide and all of the materials needed to
do the activity. These materials are held in a yellow and
black mesh bag that has the FLIP character (a dog) on the
front. The 20 FLIP Kits given to partner sites will not have
the Children's Museum and Houston Public Library logos on
them. The activity guide is two-sided and has four sections:
a description of the book, suggestions on how to read the
book, instructions on how to do the activity and activity
extension options. In Houston, the FLIP Kits are displayed
and selected from a kiosk that looks like a dog house. Partners
can use this same method or other solutions that are appropriate
for their venue(s).
Does FLIP partnership require that
museums and libraries work together to implement the program?
No. Museum and library partnership
is required for the National Implementation and Workshop 10
awardee teams. However, after May 18, 2011, non-awardee libraries
and museums can implement FLIP in whatever way is most effective
for their community.
How long are FLIP awardees required
to circulate the 20 kits?
The awardees are required to circulate
the kits in their community for one year and to report their
circulation statistics for that time frame.
How much are the replenishment costs
for each kit after each checkout?
The average replenishment cost per
kit is planned to be $2.50 per checkout for consumable materials.
Some kits will require more replenishment than others. However,
those chosen as the 20 given to awardees will be those that
have the lower replenishment costs.
How does the exclusivity agreement
work?
Each applicant team is invited to request
a geographic area of exclusivity or a list of local organizations
to be excluded. These requests will be reviewed during the
application process and if the applicant's request poses problems
during application review, the team may be contacted for negotiation.
Based on the agreed exclusions, the Children's Museum of Houston
will not provide FLIP plans or manuals to any other organization
in the defined area as long as the original FLIP partner remains
active in their implementation of the FLIP program.
Can awardee organizations implement
more than the 20 FLIP Kits that are given to the teams at
the May 18 National Training Workshop?
Yes, partners are encouraged to implement
more than the 20 initial FLIP Kits as their local funding
allows.
Are there ways for my city to add
our library and museum branding to the kits so that it feels
like something owned by our community?
Yes, there will be a few ways to do
this which will be described in the tool kit provided in the
training and through the Web site. The laminated activity
guide is one component of the kit that cannot be modified.
