As more herbs and vegetables come up, we invite visitors outdoors to explore, plant and taste in the garden. We have many engaging outdoor activities - always popular because children love being outside! The Outdoor Learning Lab at the Bay Area Discovery Museum invites children to explore the wild and the cultivated in our outdoor hands-on exhibition with science, art and environmental elements. Children get up close and personal with butterflies in our living exhibit, Blooming Butterflies.This 2,500 sq ft enclosed habitat is filled with dozens of species of trees and plants to showcase the lifespan of over 20 species of butterflies. Underland, our subterranean environment featuring a host of native natural materials and pieces by local artists, inspires outdoor play and a sense of wonder. Long Island Children’s Museum has developed a school-museum teaching model to expand the science education program with the underserved school district of Westbury, NY. Through the program, which is funded by National Grid, Westbury teachers and students have exclusive use of the Museums on Monday. Teachers use LICM’s exhibitions and hands-on workshops to teach science curriculum; multiple visits to LICM directly engage students in the process of scientific inquiry. LICM also provides in-classroom programs, professional development for educators and hosts Community Nights at the Museum for participating students and their families Up, Down, All Around: Geometry in your Visual World had a fantastic opening weekend in Lander, WY. This month-long interactive exhibit is part of a community-based collaboration between the museum, the local library, art center, and PALS (an organization dedicated to promoting arts in our schools). Pretend City is just having so much fun this week celebrating Dr. Seuss's Birthday with Read Across America! Our staff members, on their own accord, dress up as Dr. Seuss characters and get our Pretenders excited about reading! Port Discovery Children's Museum (Baltimore, MD) is proud to present Tot Trails! Tot Trails gives Infants and toddlers a great new place to learn through play in a whimsical exhibit that celebrates Maryland's heritage! The workshop is part of our Traveling Science Workshops program, sponsored by MathWorks, which brings hands-on science and STEM concepts into K-8 classrooms throughout New England. The workshop is part of our Traveling Science Workshops Toppings Here is a photo from a great National Children's Museum outreach event--The Museum partnered with Cirque du Soleil around their DC production of OVO with a special family science program, Insect Mania! at the NCM Launch Zone. NCM aims to create a sense of “place” outside of the Museum and maintain solid relationships with the community. Visitors explore the Lily Pad Pond at Discovery Center in Murfreesboro, TN. Children paint designs with water on slate walls and watch them evaporate in our outdoor Habitat Park exhibit. Children find their way through Kohl Children's Museum's prairie grass maze, part of Habitat Park, a 2-acre outdoor nature exhibit. Friends from Old Gallinas Marin County Community Child Development Program get muddy in the Bay Area Discovery Museum Habitat Garden as part of our innovative Connections program. A young reader at the Children's Museum of Houston shows off her new book and pinata for Las Posadas as part of our ongoing Free Family Night Bilingual Storytime. The Children's Museum of Houston visited Alief ISD's Holub Middle School to create "Oobleck," a gooey polymer which resists force and flows freely with slow movement. It's all part of the Houston's Kids program that facilitates innovative math and science activities. At a Children's Museum of Houston Para los Niños workshop, a mother and her children are reading If You Give a Mouse a Cookie while doing the activity “Story Cans.” In this activity they read the book together as they identify objects in the can and then place them in the order as they appeared in the book. Para los Niños is a family learning program that serves parents whose first language is Spanish. The National Children's Museum will presented its third annual Jump Off! at National Harbor this fall with a special focus on health and safety.
